Rifle Hunts
Colorado currently has 4 rifle seasons with the first season limited to a draw. Bull tags can be purchased over the counter for the remaining three seasons.
Our guided rifle hunts are 5 days in length, based on 2 hunters per guide, although 1 on 1 hunts can be arranged. All of our hunts take place from our lodge, which is located in the heart of our permitted area. Although we hunt mostly national forest lands, the nature of the terrain effectively limits other hunters to a minimum. As attested by past clients, it is unusual to encounter another hunter in the woods.
The rugged, spectacular San Juans
Horses are often used to access some of the 100,000 + acres in our permit, but most of the actual hunting is on foot. Unlike private ranch hunts where you may be dropped off along a road and told to look for game, our hunts are a true "fair chase" challenge, testing the skill of the guide as well as the hunter himself. We always tailor the physical side of the hunt to the capability of the hunter; however, physically preparing for your hunt by regular exercise will increase your chance for success.
Unit 71 has a large elk herd population with an increasing number of mature bulls. Most of the bulls harvested are 5- and 6-pointers with a few good mature bulls. Although we have some 300+ bulls, your odds of taking a bull this size are limited. I have always felt that any 5- or 6-point is worthy of anyone's taking.
Hunter success on the average runs about 50 per cent. The kill percentage on any given season can be skewed by weather, and the physical fitness of the clients. A healthy herd population combined with being in the right place with a little luck can make anyone a successful elk hunter.
Our mule deer populations seem to be on the rebound, however, licenses are available by draw only. Most of our deer hunts occur on forest lands at lower elevations. Chance encounters with Black Bears are also on the increase for those possibly interested in the taking of one of these trophies.
